“Shakespeare’s Secret” (blog post #2) May 14, 2010
Posted by jean4tme in : Uncategorized , 7 comments“Shakespeare’s Secret Summary”
As you know, I have been reading a book called “Shakespeare’s Secret”. It is about a girl named Hero who recently moved to a new home. One day, she is asked to return some pruning sheers to their next door neighbor, Mrs.Roth. When Hero meets Mrs. Roth she learns about how her house is famous. It turns out that the formal owner was Mr.Murphy and the house was known as “The Diamond House”. It is called the diamond house because the man’s wife was Mrs.Murphy and she had a 17 carat diamond(the size of a walnut) and one day, no one could see it or find it. It is said that the diamond is hidden in the house, and Hero is determined to find the diamond and the necklace which is a gold chain and studded with blood-red rubies with a space for the diamond. Hero’s name is very strange, but she was named after the Hero in “Much Ado about Nothing” because her father and her mother love Shakespeare’s plays so they named her Hero and her older sister Beatrice who was also in “Much Ado about Nothing”. (See summary at bottom of post.)
What did you find interesting in the book?
Something I found interesting was that Mrs.Roth used to be married to Mr.Murphy and Mrs.Murphy became BEST-FRIENDS with Mrs.Roth, her husband’s ex-wife. I do not think that is right because normally the person who USED to be married is jealous of the person they MARRIED after they divorced. I also wonder why they got divorced. It doesn’t make sense to divorce with someone when your adopted child runs away from you. Mrs. Roth also did not change the “Mrs” part of the name, and changed her last name back to her maiden name.

“Much Ado about Nothing” Summary
Hero a beautiful young woman meets a man named Claudio. They fall in love and they get pledged to be married to each other. Before the wedding, Don John tells Claudio that Hero did something very wrong. So on the day of the wedding, Hero’s family decides to pretend that Hero died of shock when she fainted. When Claudio realized that Don John was lying, he told everyone that Hero was innocent and he grieved for Hero. Someone tells Claudio to marry Beatrice, Hero’s cousin, because she looks similar to Hero. So, when Beatrice was to reveal herself, under the mask, there was Hero! When Claudio realized that, he was very happy and they lived together for a very long time.

When her mother asks her to return their next door neighbor, Mrs.Roth, she learns that she is living in a famous house. The house belonged to Mr.Murphy and his wife owned a diamond the size of a walnut that was on a gorgeous necklace. One day, the diamond disappeared and people searched hard, but never found it. When Hero hears the story she is determined to find this mysterious diamond. On the way, she meets Danny Cordova, a popular boy in eighth grade who is eager to help Hero and become her friend. They both know Mrs.Roth very well, and they know she has more information than she tells, but she won’t say anything, so they try to figure it out by themselves. Hero and her sister Beatrice were named after the characters in Shakespeare’s “Much Ado about Nothing”. Now, Hero is trying to solve this mystery. Will Danny and Hero be able to find the diamond, or will they fail in their search? To find out, read this book!
*Spoiler* What would you change in the book so far? *Spoiler*
If I had a choice to change some of the book, I would change that Mrs.Roth being Mr.Murphy’s ex-wife. I do not believe it is very important to the book, so I believe that it shouldn’t be that way because Hero and Mrs.Roth have an argument all over that. Hero believes that Mrs.Roth lied to her, so she is very angry at her and I don’t think it counts for anything in the book later.

“Dragon Flight” & “Dragon Slippers” & “Dragon Spear” April 22, 2010

Dragon Spear
I have been reading an independent book called “Dragon Flight” It is the second book of Jessica Day George’s “Dragon” books. The first one is “Dragon Slippers” and the last one is ‘Dragon Spear”. She also wrote:
“Princess of the Midnight Ball” and “Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow”. “Dragon Slippers” is about a farm girl named Creel, whose parents are dead so she is in the care of her aunt. Finally, her family decides that they will sacrifice her to the dragon of her hometown, hoping the local prince will come and marry her. She eventually gains the dragon, Theoradus’s, trust. Instead of dragon gold, like she wanted, she receives slippers made from the deceased dragon queen, Velika,’s scales. Soon, she is able to leave, so she goes to Feravel to become a seamstress like her mother. On her way to Feravel, a group of people try to rob her, but a dragon saves her. He is a large gold dragon with blue horns and he is known as Shardas, the dragon king. He offers her to stay for a bit. After a few days, she says goodbye and is on her way. Almost as soon as she gets there, she meets Prince Luka and Princess Amalia, who is a snobby girl from another kingdom, to marry the first born of King Caxel, Milun. She orders that Creel give her the shoes at once, but Creel refuses and walks on. Prince Luka gets her some shelter and all that. The next morning, she finds work in Derda’s shop. Her first customer ends up as a duchess! Soon, she is invited to a ball, and whoever looks the best, or something, gets to have their very own shop. Creel is very excited so she makes a beautiful dress, but when checking on her shoes, there’s a horribly ugly dress, and Creel KNOWS that Amalia stole them. She is very upset. When she gets to the ball, Shardas tears open the roof with Amalia riding on top of him with Creel’s shoes. Creel is excited to see Shardas. But Shardas fires at her and tries to kill everyone. Will Creel be able to save Shardas or will she burn in the flames?
“Dragon Flight” is about Creel and she learns that another kingdom wants to take over Feravel. She also learns that the army has incredibly large dragons collared, that controls their minds. When she visits the king, she realizes that he is being controlled by a large white dragon. She soon tells Shardas and Velika, who was found alive, and Shardas said he would come That dragon was Shardas’s brother named Krashath. Will Creel be able to save Feravel and the dragons or will she fail? If you want to find out, read this book!
“Dragon Spear” is about when Prince Luka proposes to Creel, and they are planning to get married, but something goes VERY wrong with the dragons. I have not read this book yet, so I do not know much.
How is this like anything you know about?
The book, “Dragon Flight” reminds me of the movie “How to train your dragon” because the boy has to make the dragon a new tail so it can fly, and in “Dragon Flight” Creel makes wings for Shardas so he can fly. It also reminds me of “The Lion King” because Scar and Mufasa always fought over the throne and they were ready to kill each other, and in “Dragon Flight” Krashath and Shardas both want the throne so they fight each other to the death. When Gala, a dragoness, said that if she got hurt or anything happened to her, for Creel to take care of her children. It reminded me of a lot of books and movies and TV shows when that happened. ( In the pictures, the girl is Creel, and the boy is Prince Luka.)

Adora Svitak April 16, 2010
Posted by jean4tme in : Uncategorized , 2 commentsI have just watched a video about Adora Svitak who gave a inspiring speech that says that kids can be better than adults. She believed that kids can be much better than adults. There might be wars and battles from adults, but what about Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and other kids just like that. She is currently a twelve year old girl. She wrote the book “Flying Fingers” which is a book with many short stories that Svitak has written as a very young girl. She was absolutely inspiring in the speech “What adults can learn from Kids”. When she was four years old, she received a DELL laptop to type stories on. She has one sister named Adrianna Svitak. Kids have large imaginations that stretch to ending world hunger and everything is free, but even though they sound impossible, kids still believe. She also believes that every generation is different and better so that we have advanced from prehistoric times, to now. Kids also think about possibilities in the future while stubborn adults usually think about the present. She talked on TED and it was interesting to see how adults were paying such good attention to a twelve year old girl. She wasn’t BORN clever, but she studied hard, read good books, payed attention, and she is what she is now. She is used to talking to schools full of teachers and students, but apparently, she gets to talk in fromt of many adults who are just, well, adults! She shows emotion through her words in actions. She has a large variety of difficult words. Because she has such great vocabulary, she knows the word that seems most appropriate to an older audience and a younger audience, so basically for both groups of people. After watching that video I am very inspired to do my best in writing and get good grades and become a very good writer. This is the video below! ↓↓↓↓↓
Hachiko Waits April 15, 2010
Posted by jean4tme in : Uncategorized , add a commentFor an independent book I have been reading a book called “Hachiko Waits”. It is about a Akita puppy who lives with a professor named Professor Eizaburo Ueno who is very loyal to his master. He meets a boy named Yasuo and his mother. They are all friends. Everyday, the dog would go to the train station with his master and leave and come back five minutes before three because the train comes back at three o’ clock, until one day, Hachi’s master (First name of Hachiko) dies unexpectedly. Before the train left the station, Hachi barks at the train and the professor is pleased because he’s always wanted to hear Hachi’s voice. Hachi still believes that his master is just late for his train when his master is dead. Yasuo tries to take care of Hachi, but he runs back to the train station. Years pass, and Hachi still waits and for his loyalty he was renamed Hachiko. People come to see him when they are sad or upset and they feel better when seeing how loyal Hachiko was to the professor. They said if you touched his fur, it would give you luck. Ten years after the professor’s death, Hachiko weakly gets up and barks again, and falls down dead. Yasuo is heart-broken and the train master beckons Yasuo to his office and he tells him that it is a sad day, but it is happy because the professor has been waiting for Hachiko on the train to heaven and today, he would be happy because he would see his beloved dog on that train and Hachiko would no longer feel old. They soon make a statue for Hachiko in the exact spot he always sat. When they show everyone the statue, Yasuo whispers: ”What a good dog you are, what a fine dog you are. Hachiko you are the best dog of all of Japan.” That is sad because when the professor was still alive he said that to Hachi a lot.
What would you change about the book?
I would change the epilogue in the end. Because it’s just Yasuo falling in love and his girl friend and he saying that when they got married, they would be as loyal as Hachiko to the professor and it doesn’t have much to do with the book.

This YHBA book is very sad and this is the cover of it

“King of the Wind” March 24, 2010
Posted by jean4tme in : Uncategorized , add a commentI have been reading a book called “King of the Wind”. It is about a young male horse who was born with a sign of good luck, the white heel of speed, and a sign of bad luck, the wheat ear which is a chest with the hairs looking like a ripened ear of wheat. The good luck showed because the little horse, named Sham, is faster that all of the other horses so no one challenged him any more and he had a wonderful horse-boy, named Agba, to take care of him. The bad luck showed because soon after he was born, his mother died and he was very close to death, but with the scales of good and bad tipped even, Agba took care of him, and Sham became one of the strongest horses. Something that surprised me was how the mare died so quickly after the birth of her colt. Reading that made me sad and confused because I didn’t know how she died. Something that I found interesting was that when Agba was very worried, the good part of the scale would happen like Agba taking care of Sham and the survival and Sham being chosen as a royal horse to be gifted to the king, but the horse-boy would remain with the horse as long as the horse lives and Agba was very grateful because of that.

"Black Beauty" Cover
I have been reading a book called “Black Beauty” and it is about a horse that lives with his mother as a foal and was soon sent to live with a man named Squire Gordon at Birtwick Park. There he meets horses named Ginger and ill tempered horse, Merrylegs a pert little pony, a horse named Justice, a old horse named Sir Oliver, and his own mother Duchess. He also meets the humans: Squire Gordon, Farmer Grey his first master, Mistress of Squire Gordon, their children, and is soon to meet many more. I really enjoy reading it because the story shows most of the things that a horse would experience through the horse’s view. I also like how there’s friends and sorrows like a true person’s life. I also like how there is a lot of passion to tell the reader that this is how a horse should be treated and how it should not be treated. The things that I don’t like how the book has a lot of drama that goes a little too far when Beauty’s having a glorious time such as: James leaving, the mistress’s illness, his own illness, and the Gordon family leaving Birtwick Park and having all of the horses sold off. Another reason that I don’t like the book is because sometimes, the setting isn’t set and some sort of conflict happens which leaves the reader hanging there without a clue of what is going on. The things that I do like and don’t like are the parts when there is a side story, and I do like it because I learn more, but I don’t like it because it gets off of the story. I also do not like and do like the fact that the book has many characters that are sometimes absolutely useless and I like it because it gives examples of torture and love, but I don’t like it because I get very confused when reading about them because they almost never come back in the story again. Sometimes in the second part, it shifts from one setting to another which makes me very angry because I have no clue about what is going on. I also do not like it because it is so predictable and so easy to know what will happen next because all of my predictions were quite right and I like it because I have a tiny clue of what’s going to happen and I get myself ready to see if I was right or wrong. I enjoy this books a lot and I just want to clarify that there are things that you should enjoy most of the parts and it’s okay to dislike the book because of some things and it’s great to enjoy it without dislikes, but you should probably think about likings and dislikes.

This book means a lot to me because the story tells me that horses have feelings too and we shouldn’t harm them because of fashion or disobedience even if you want to because that will make them fear you instead of having a fondness of you which you would want so they will obey you without hesitation.
